Nemours Health & Prevention Services (NHPS) in partnership with the Delaware School Boards Association (DSBA), the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), Delaware Division of Public Health (DDPH), the Delaware Charter School Network, and the Delaware Association of School Administrators (DASA) is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2010 Edith P. Vincent Healthy Schools Award. The awards will recognize the work of public schools championing children’s health: one in the area of nutrition and one in the area of physical education/physical activity. Award recipients will consist of those public schools that have demonstrated effective implementation of best practice and/or creative and visionary programs that address policy and practice changes related to improved nutrition/healthy eating or physical education/physical activity in the school setting in an effort to combat childhood obesity.
Description
The Edith P. Vincent Healthy Schools Award will be given to public school that has displayed success in the implementation of programs that address policy and practice change in the areas of improved nutrition/healthy eating or physical education/physical activity. Each winning school will receive a commemorative plaque recognizing its achievement at the Delaware School Boards Association Fall Clinic held annually in October, a banner suitable for public display and formal recognition at their local Board of Education meeting. Eligibility
All nominees must be a public school within the State of Delaware and focus on policy and practice changes related to healthy eating and physical education/physical activity in an effort to combat childhood obesity. The awards are intended for Delaware public and charter schools that:
- Demonstrate child health promotion as an integral part of their infrastructure;
- Address policy and practice changes related to nutrition/healthy eating or physical education/physical activity in an effort to combat childhood obesity;
- That promote and implement recognized best practices and/or innovative, visionary approaches;
- Are replicable and sustainable.
Award Criteria
- Program Design (worth 30% of the score):
- Goals and Objectives (10%): Clearly articulates the goals and objectives of the program.
- Evidenced-based (10%): The extent to which the program design is based on the best available evidence.
- Innovation and Vision (10%): Describe how the program represents an innovative, visionary approach to combating childhood obesity in the school setting.
- Effectiveness (worth 70% of score):
- Evaluation criteria (20%): Describe the evaluation criteria of the program and how the program objectives are evaluated.
- Impact (20%): Describe the impact (or potential impact) of the program and its success (or progress) in meeting its goals and objectives. Describe the program’s overall impact (or potential impact) on helping the children it serves through the provision of a healthy environment in the school setting.
- Replication (15%): Describe the extent to which the program can be successfully replicated and implemented in other schools and/or districts.
- Sustainability (15%): Describe the potential of the program to be sustained over time.
Awards Program Process
The Edith P. Vincent Healthy Schools Award Committee will be comprised of representatives from Nemours Health & Prevention Services, Delaware School Boards Association, the School Health Advisory Council, the Delaware Charter School Network, and the Delaware Department of Public Health. The Committee will review and screen all nominations, conduct on-site evaluations of finalists, and score the nominations based on the award criteria outlined above. Winners will be notified in writing by June 1, 2010, with formal recognition taking place at the recipient district or schools July 2010 Board meeting and the awards ceremony will take place during the 2010 Delaware School Board Association Fall Clinic in October 2010.
How to Nominate a Program for the Edith P. Vincent Healthy Schools Award
To nominate a program, follow the instructions outlined on the Edith P. Vincent Award Nomination Form. All nomination materials must be received by April 15, 2010.
